School visits

A huge thank you to the local primary schools who allowed us to come in and talk about neuroanatomy and Healthy living/ healthy brain last week. It was very interesting to hear from pupils and teacher and to learn more about the questions they have about the brain.

Latest grant success

We have been awarded a small grant from Alzheimer’s Research UK to investigate adipokine receptor expression in cognitive dysfunction syndrome cats. Like elderly humans, felines can show memory issues with age and it will be interesting to uncover to what extent mechanisms and risk factors are shared. Alison Holiday will be working on this study in collaboration with Lorena Sordo and Professor Danielle Gunn-Moore from the University of Edinburgh. A big thank you to the Alzheimer’s Research UK Scotland Network for sponsoring this exciting study.

Three Minute Thesis Winner 2017

Congratulations to Alison for winning the St Andrews round of the three minute thesis competition. This contest challenges PhD candidates to explain their entire thesis in 3 minutes in language appropriate for a non-specialist audience. Participants may only use one powerpoint slide. No props, animations or interpretive dance were allowed. As the winner of the University final she wins £500 to spend on a public-engagement event and a recording of her presentation will be put into the national semi-finals.

Parkrun fun

Thank you so much to everyone who came to talk to us at Parkrun today. We heard some interesting stories and met some people who gave us inspiration for our future research. Hopefully some of you will sign up to run down dementia and raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK over the summer months. And congratulations to Mark Doherty on completing his first parkrun!

Running down dementia

It’s that time of year again when Alzheimer’s Research UK team up with parkrun to run down dementia. Come along and join us at St Andrews parkrun this Saturday, 20th May, when Gayle and Dr Maggie Ellis will be representing ARUK and providing more information on the campaign.
