Congratulations Karina!

wp_20161031_12_46_06_pro1Congratulations to our summer Laidlaw intern Karina Vitanova for winning the best poster prize for Science & Medicine at this year’s Laidlaw poster event. Karina’s poster represented her summer project investigating the potential for the neuroprotective hormone leptin to protect mitochondria from damage.

This is the second year that the Doherty group have won this prize. Last year’s winner Vanya Metodeiva (who worked on the potential of ethnopharmaceuticals to protect against neurodegeneration) is now studying for a PhD with Professor Gunn-Moore in the School of Biology, University of St Andrews.

Brain training at parkrun

A huge thank you to Noel Heaney, Stasa Tumpa and Lize Viljoen, three of our final year honours B.Sc. Neuroscience students, for their help at Explorathon 2016. We had a great time at Craigtoun park introducing the benefits of brain training and talking about St Andrews being a dementia friendly community. It was lovely to meet so many people who were interested in all we had to say.
